Caitlin this was possibly one of the most "spot on" amazing blog posts that pinpoints the lack of admirable values in the pop music industry today - and has over-pinned it, rather than underpinning it - for as long as I can remember. Wouldn't it be nice if the stars of today were not just rich kids with celebrity launch trusts and a vapid lack of social responsibility? Makes me glad I still rock out to the same old punk rock and post-punk albums I loved in the 80's and 90's. But still, it's time for a more responsible music industry - one of the problems with a decentralized, social media driven market is that there is less need for PR people to encourage their young stars to send positive messages & "heal the world." I'm not saying we need the sort of censorship that Tipper Gore brought in the 1980's (obviously I'm way against that), but at this juncture nor do we need the antagonistic revolt of people like Jello Biafra to challenge them, but people need to be informed and stars need to shine for a good reason - not just because they got bling and plastic surgery to look the part. And auto-tuning is a terrifying neutralizer of vocals (and denier of talent) - it makes everyone sound compressed and metallic - but it is funny when it fails like when Black Eyed Peas played the Super Bowl a few years ago...was nice to remind the public that their heroes are not necessarily spotless fashion plates with compressed voices....Time for real talent to spread real messages that inform the public about the global society they live in! As internet denizens I can only hope next gen fans find social responsibility and talent as must haves in their idols...

A few years back my friend Chris gathered some friends and said he wanted to start a unique photo webcomic that would be very multimedia and integrate social networking. we brainstormed and came up with a lot of good ideas. I was going to play one of the characters in it, and each person who would be playing a character was given the task of developing their character and storyline.

I had originally thought my character, Eleanor, would be a chef, and she would go through some sort of trauma that would cause her to change her path in life. Eventually she would realize that all she wanted to do was make people happy, and opened her own bakery.

As time went on, and I saw that the world was absolutely inundated with fiction involving females running bakeries, I realized that we needed to make some MAJOR changes. Eleanor can be anything! So now she is a chemist, and her major trauma leads her to search for the meaning of life, and she starts experimenting with psychedelic compounds that she has created and she comes to understand how we are all connected, etc.

Anyhow, if this webcomic ever becomes a reality, I hope you will appreciate that one of the main female characters has undergone major rewriting in the name of providing a STEM role model for women and girls. And definitely for the better. This character makes so much more sense within the story now, and is a far more interesting person.

I'm wondering too if stories' ritual/cultural functions are played up when we know how they end. Or if the success of the telling becomes more like that in a sonnet- about performing well within limitations and structures pre-defined.
